Winter is a great time to look at lake property. Lake houses in the winter are cold and view is not so good or is it?  In the winter when the lakes are drawn down so that you can build a sea wall, dock or do your general lake access clean up.   You can see how deep the water is and whether you are on a channel or a cove.  You can fix up your fish bed, clean up and spread out some sand along the shore and you can build the dock you have always wanted.  Winter allows you to see what you are getting without having to imagine what you are seeing through the water.

There are 3 things you need to do every time the water is drawn down at the lake:

1) check the supports of your dock, make sure they are still in good condition and that the beavers have not been nibbling around the base. Check the sea wall to make sure they have not been digging tunnels there too.

2) clean up any debris along your shoreline.  Make sure there are no bottles or glass and that the general condition is good. If not now is the time to add some sand or rip rap to the shore.

3) build your fish bed.  Most lakes are drawn down in the winter, between Thanksgiving and the 15th of January.  This gives you the holidays to get the work done.  After Christmas, take your Christmas tree down to the edge of the lake, (anchor it down with blocks to keep it from floating away), Christmas trees make a wonderful fish cover for when the lake comes back to full table.
