Henry orchestrated an unforgettable trip to Huntsville, Alabama, this Valentine's weekend, blending relaxation, culture, and adventure.
Friday: Arrival and Relaxation
We embarked on our journey through Atlanta, arriving by mid-afternoon at the Drury Inn in Huntsville, Alabama. Our spacious room offered a serene skyline and mountain views, providing a peaceful retreat. Opting for a cozy evening, we enjoyed drinks and hot hors d'oeuvres at the hotel amidst the lively atmosphere of students participating in a wrestling tournament.
Saturday: Shopping, Art, and Astronomy
Our day began with visits to local favorites Walmart and Trader Joe's, where Henry and Sandy experienced the unique offerings of Trader Joe's for the first time. Lunch was a delightful affair at Viet Huong Vietnamese Restaurant, savoring flavorful pho and the hearty Chicken & Shrimp in a Clay Pot—perfect for the overcast weather.
In the afternoon, we explored the Huntsville Museum of Art, spending over two hours immersed in diverse exhibits showcasing Alabama artists. A drive through Maple Hill Cemetery followed, where we reflected on the contributions of German immigrants to the U.S. rocket program.
The evening led us to the planetarium at Monte Sano State Park. For just $5, we enjoyed an engaging presentation on the night sky, guided by a knowledgeable presenter. The winding drive down the mountain afterward offered stunning views of Huntsville's illuminated skyline.
Sunday: Space Exploration and Southern Cuisine
Our Sunday tradition took us to WOW Donuts in Madison, Alabama, for a sweet start to the day. We worked on the Corporate minutes and had our annual meeting.
We then spent approximately four hours at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, marveling at actual rockets, astronaut uniforms, and interactive exhibits that provided insight into life beyond Earth.
Lunch was at the Metro Diner, where we indulged in classic Southern fried chicken, followed by a restful afternoon nap.
Monday: Journey Home
We packed up and began our return trip via Atlanta, making a delicious lunch stop at Havanna South in Buford, Georgia.
This weekend was a harmonious blend of culture, history, and culinary delights thoughtfully planned by Henry. Huntsville, Alabama, offered us a memorable experience we'll cherish for years.
