In This Area Known As Oconee County, SC
Oconee County South Carolina, home to Long Creek, Mountain Rest, Salem and Walhalla offers some of the best real estate value in the country. Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Oconee County offers ten private lakes as well as Hartwell, Jocassee and Keowee, three large public, power company maintained lakes. Sitting just off of I-85 we are within an hour of Greenville, SC, Highlands & Cashiers, NC and less than two hours to Atlanta. Clemson with all the charm of a small southern college town is less than a half hour away. Because it is less well known than its neighbors, North Carolina and Northeast Georgia, our area’s property prices and taxes remain significantly lower than the surrounding areas while still providing plenty of acreage tracts. This makes Oconee County especially desirable for retirees, investors or anyone looking for a peaceful second or weekend home. Many will also enjoy the fact that while we have a four-season climate, our summers and winters are mild averaging 1 to 2 light snows per winter.
One third of Oconee County is part of the Sumter National Forest so we will never have the crowded feeling that is driving down property values in other Park System areas. Thanks to the National Forest, State Parks and over 60 of our most beautiful waterfalls will always be accessible to the public this also ensures plenty of well maintained hiking trails, horse trails, hunting and fishing. The state run fish hatchery also makes sure the lakes and rivers are stocked as well as hosting a yearly kids fishing tournament. There are example opportunities for golfers since we have over fifty courses within fifty miles and for rafting enthusiasts there are guided excursions down the famous Chattooga River.
The county seat, Walhalla, is host a yearly Oktoberfest, a three-day celebration of the town’s German origin that includes arts & crafts, authentic foods and dancing and fireworks coinciding with the colorful fall foliage. Take the short drive over to Clemson for live music or dramatic performances at the Brooks Center on the university campus or enjoy Tiger football, basketball, baseball or other sports as they take on ACC rivals as well as other major college competition. Travel on to Greenville for live performances at the Peace Center, home of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra and host of many major touring acts. Again less than two hours and you are in Atlanta where you can find all of the art, culture, sporting events, shopping and fine dining that you would expect from the biggest city in the southeast U.S., as well as one of the biggest airline hubs in the country making the whole world accessible.
