Leaf Tour
This weekend will be the peak color weekend. Octoberfest was last weekend. Usually we have rain and all the leaves come down. Not this year. This year the weekend of October 27/28 will be the best leaf looking time.
My favorite leaf looking drive is a loop. I like to go from Walhalla up Highway 28. Stop at the look out just above the Dakota Grill. From this look out you can see the stadium at Clemson and on a clear day you can view some of the buildings in downtown Greenville. Continue up Highway 28 and turn right on Highway 107. I like to stop by the fish hatchery and walk around for a while. If you have time take a picnic and walk to the river for lunch. Easy hike and at this time of the year you will feel the crispness of the air.
When you finish at the hatchery, get back on Highway 107 and go left toward Cashiers. There is an overlook in this area with great views too. Travel a couple of miles and turn right on the Rochester Highway. This loop follows a ridge and will give you views of the mountains as well as vistas that include Lake Keowee and Lake Hartwell. From some of the overlooks it will feel like you are looking at a patchwork quilt. The colors are most vivid. When you get to the stop sign, go right on Highway 130. This will take you back to Highway 11 and if you go right you will come back to Walhalla.
I hope you enjoy your mountain/leaf ride as much as I do. Take a trip, out gas prices are down to $3/ gallon, so believe it or not, this will be a cheap weekend tour. Enjoy your leaf looking tour.
