From Walhalla to the World: How an Early Birth Shaped Atlanta’s Skyline

Most people don’t realize that one of the greatest architectural minds of the 20th century was born right here in Walhalla, South Carolina.

On December 4, 1924, John Portman was born early, in this quiet mountain town. Though his time here was brief, it marked the beginning of a life that would leave a global legacy in architecture, development, and design.

Portman became famous for creating spaces that were not only functional, but breathtaking. His design for the Hyatt Regency Atlanta in 1967 was a game changer. With its soaring 22-story atrium and glass elevators, it redefined how we experience hotels—and launched a worldwide trend.

But his vision didn’t stop there.

From that first project, Portman went on to reshape the skyline of Atlanta with iconic structures like:

The Westin Peachtree Plaza (the tall cylindrical tower with a rotating restaurant)
The Atlanta Marriott Marquis (known for its jaw-dropping atrium)
Peachtree Center and SunTrust Plaza
His unique approach as both architect and developer gave him full creative control—something rarely seen in the profession. And thanks to that freedom, Portman was able to create bold, human-centered designs that still inspire architects today.

From a small town in the South to global recognition, John Portman’s journey reminds us that even the quietest beginnings can lead to monumental legacies.

Next time you're walking the streets of Atlanta—or looking up at its gleaming towers—remember: it all started in Walhalla.
